End of Support for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008
In light of Microsoft’s January 2020 news to end their support of their Windows 7 operating system and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2, Alteryx will be updating our terms of support to reflect this change. This is the first notification announcing the pending change, so please read carefully to prepare yourself and your organization for what’s to come.
Microsoft is urging customers to update to more modern platforms such as their Windows 10 operating system and Azure cloud services where users will receive the latest security updates that keep you and your data safe. While Alteryx will continue to work on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, organizations continuing to use the Platform on these operating systems will be increasingly vulnerable to security risks and attacks.
Why are we responding to this change?
As a platform you trust to securely manage and process your data to deliver insights and help drive decisions, it is one of our primary concerns to ensure we do everything we can to maintain this trust. Since Microsoft ended support of their now legacy platforms, we incur more risk that a defect attributed to Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 can negatively impact the stability and performance of Alteryx.
While defects specifically attributed to Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 are not widespread, they do actively occur. With Microsoft’s decision to no longer address these defects, we run a greater risk of experiencing negative effects that may degrade performance or put your data at risk of new vulnerabilities and security threats.
For Alteryx to continue to meet the security, responsiveness, stability, and performance demands of our customers, we are aligning ourselves to our technology partner to ensure you have the best experience possible.
Who will this impact?
While Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 came out over 10 years ago, we realize that they continue to be trusted and reliable operating systems for organizations across the world. If you or your organization are using Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008, please know that you will still be able to use Alteryx, however, support for this platform will end at the beginning of 2021. We strongly recommend that you plan to migrate to a modern platform at your earliest convenience.
What is the Alteryx Support Plan for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008?
Alteryx will continue to support Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008, including the evaluation of product defects that are directly attributed to these operating systems through the end of 2020. Support will officially end at the beginning of 2021. Issues identified towards the end of this period are less likely to be addressed given that the time to implement a fix will extend beyond the support window. Between now and then, we ask that customers use this time to upgrade to a more modern operating system or develop a personal mitigation plan if that timeline doesn’t work.
IMPORTANT: Issues or defects reported by customers using one of these operating systems on or after 1/1/2021 will need to be replicated on a supported platform for them to be considered for resolution by Alteryx. Again, we strongly recommend that you plan to migrate to a modern platform to mitigate this risk so that we can continue to support your analytics and data-driven decision-making process.
What if we purchased a Microsoft Extended Security Update plan?
While your company may opt to purchase an Extended Security Update plan from Microsoft, it will not cover newly discovered issues with Alteryx running on the Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 operating systems.
What are the key milestones for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 Support?
Start of Q2 2020
Nine-month grace period begins as Alteryx prepares to end support of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2.
Q2 – Q3 2020
Alteryx support will answer questions and provide guidance regarding the end of support of Windows 7. Depending on the severity and level of effort, Alteryx product development teams may continue to address product defects attributed to Windows 7 during this time period.
December 31, 2020
This is the last day of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 support. After this date, you must be able to replicate an issue on a supported operating system. Troubleshooting efforts by the Alteryx team will be minimal when you are running an unsupported operating system.
