Install Alteryx MCP Server Dependencies
Overview
The Alteryx One app installer includes the local Alteryx MCP Server, which allows supported AI clients and Alteryx Skills to work with your local Alteryx Designer environment.
It doesn't include its own AI model. Connected AI clients act on behalf of the signed-in Alteryx One user and can only access the assets and capabilities that user already has permission to use.
The Alteryx One app installer doesn't install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime. You must install it separately before the Alteryx MCP Server can run.
Requirements
Before you use the local Alteryx MCP Server, make sure you meet these requirements:
Alteryx One app installed.
Designer installed locally.
Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime installed. Use the supplied installer:
A valid Alteryx One sign-in, license, and entitlement.
A supported AI client or MCP client (Claude, Codex, or Antigravity).
Alteryx Skills installed from the GitHub repository. For install instructions, go to Get Started with Alteryx Skills.
Install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime
Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is required for the Alteryx MCP Server to run.
Download the Alteryx-supplied .NET 8 Desktop Runtime installer: https://downloads.alteryx.com/runtimes/windowsdesktop-runtime-8.0.28-win-x64.exe.
Run the installer.
Follow the installation prompts.
If prompted, approve the installation with administrator privileges.
After installation, restart any open terminal, AI client, or MCP client.
Managed or Multi-User Environments
In managed or multi-user environments such as Citrix, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Terminal Services, or locked-down enterprise desktops, an IT administrator might need to install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime before users can run the Alteryx MCP Server.
Contact your IT administrator if you don't have permission to install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime.
Install Alteryx One App
Download and run the Alteryx One app installer.
Follow the installation prompts.
If the installer indicates that Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is already installed, no additional runtime action is required.
If the installer indicates that Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is not installed, you can complete the installation, but the Alteryx MCP Server won't run until Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is installed.
Select Finish.
Restart any open terminal, AI client, or MCP client so it can detect the installed Alteryx MCP Server.
Verify the Installation
To verify that the Alteryx MCP Server is ready:
Open your supported AI or MCP client.
Use the Alteryx Skill or MCP integration.
If setup is complete, the plugin used in a supported AI or MCP client should be able to call the local Alteryx MCP Server.
Troubleshooting
The AI Client Can't Start the Alteryx MCP Server
This can happen for several reasons:
Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is not installed.
The terminal, AI client, or MCP client was open before the Alteryx One app was installed and needs to be restarted.
Alteryx One app sign-in, licensing, or entitlement is not valid.
Try these steps:
Confirm that Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime is installed.
Confirm that the Alteryx One app was installed successfully.
Close and reopen your terminal, AI client, or MCP client.
Open the Alteryx One app and sign in.
Try the Alteryx Skill again.
The Installer Says .NET 8 Desktop Runtime Is Missing
Install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime from the Alteryx download page, then restart any open terminal, AI client, or MCP client.
You can install the Alteryx One app before Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, but the Alteryx MCP Server won't run until the runtime is installed.
I Don't Have Permission to Install .NET 8 Desktop Runtime
Contact your IT administrator. Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime might require administrator approval, especially in managed enterprise environments.
I Use Citrix, VDI, Terminal Services, or Another Managed Desktop
Contact your IT administrator when you install the Alteryx One app. Your organization might need to deploy Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime through its standard software management process before users can run the Alteryx MCP Server.
I Installed Everything, But the Connection Still Fails
Try these steps:
Restart your AI client or MCP client.
Restart the Alteryx One app.
Restart Designer.
Confirm that you are signed in to Alteryx One.
Confirm that your Alteryx One account has access to the relevant Alteryx capabilities.
If the issue continues, contact Alteryx Support.
Notes for Administrators
The Alteryx One app installer installs the Alteryx MCP Server, but Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime must be installed separately.
For managed desktop environments, install Microsoft .NET 8 Desktop Runtime using your standard enterprise software deployment and patching process.
The Alteryx MCP Server uses the signed-in Alteryx One user's existing permissions and entitlements. Installing the Alteryx MCP Server doesn't grant users access to additional Alteryx assets or capabilities.
