Upgrade Considerations: End of Support for Publish to Tableau Server Tool and TDE Files

The Publish to Tableau Server tool has been removed from the installer. If you wish to upgrade to Designer 2023.2, install the Tableau Output tool, which provides updated features. Additionally, Designer doesn't support Tableau TDE extract files anymore. To retain this tool, go to our guide in the Alteryx Community.

Important

Alteryx Designer version 2023.2 offers separate GA and FIPS 140-2 capable products. For more information about FIPS, go to the NIST FIPS FAQ page.

The general release version of Alteryx Designer is not FIPS capable. A separate release (and installer) is available under separate license terms for our FIPS 140-2 customers.

Feature and Tool Differences

Please note that specific tools and features might be limited or unavailable in Alteryx Designer-FIPS. Over time, we will continue to evaluate which tools and features to make available again in future Alteryx Designer-FIPS releases.

New Features: Designer

Custom Templates

You can now create and use custom templates in Alteryx Designer. Save your existing workflow, macro, or app as a template that you (and others, if shared) can reuse in the future. You can save templates with common workflow configurations and spend less time formatting workflows and more time delivering solutions. Go to Templates to learn more.

Find Missing Macros in Workflows

No more black question mark icons! When you open a workflow with missing macros, you can now resolve the missing macro issue and open the workflow with no errors. Go to Update Missing Macros to learn more.

Interactive Results Grid Enhancements

We've made enhancements to the capabilities in the Interactive Results Grid. We added a change indicator to make it easier to see that a data cleanse, filter, or sort action was applied to a data column. Additionally, you now have access to new operators for date fields, and you can now filter results that are OK and Not OK. Go to Results Window Data Manipulations to learn more.

New Formula Functions

We’ve added 3 new String functions:

  • GetPart

  • GetLeft

  • GetRight

You can use these anywhere functions are available.

Build Custom Formula Functions via C++ with AMP

Advanced workflow developers who use Custom formula functions can now use Custom C++ formula functions with AMP engine (both newly created and existing functions). For more information, go to Build Custom Formula Functions.

Updates to IRR and XIRR Functions

The IRR and XIRR functions (available in the Formula and Summarize tools) were updated to use the Newton-Raphson Method. These improvements should allow the IRR/XIRR functions to produce solutions for more cases than they did previously. With the change of underlying computation method, you might see slight changes in your results from the functions when using the same input values.

A fix to these functions has also been made for the error-handling case. In the previous version, there were some cases that could produce the erroneous value “999999” if the functions failed to converge on a result. We updated this to produce a warning message and return a NULL value in these cases.

Calculate Product via Summarize Tool

You can now calculate the product for a group of numeric values via the Summarize tool. Go to Summarize tool to learn more.

Updates to the Cloud Execution for Desktop Experience

We have made several usability enhancements to the Cloud Execution for Desktop experience in Alteryx Designer. You can now see a progress bar when you save your workflows to the Alteryx Analytics Cloud Platform (AACP). You now also have access to a quick link that brings you to the location where your workflow is saved in AACP. Additionally, when you want to open your (previously saved to AACP) desktop workflow in Designer Desktop, you can now search for the workflow by name as well as sort the workflow list.

Dark Mode Updates

Additional Designer components are now Dark Mode compatible. We have also started updating several tool configuration components to be Dark Mode compatible. Go to Dark Mode to learn more.

Beta Release

Dark Mode functionality is still in Beta at this time. This means that only certain Designer interface components have been converted to Dark Mode. Additionally, you might see certain components (including many tool configurations) that are currently only partially converted to Dark Mode. We will continue to include additional elements for Dark Mode in future releases.

Render Tool Updates

We've added right-to-left language support for PDF outputs from the Render tool. Additionally, you can now select a widescreen slide size (16:9) when you output to PowerPoint from the Render tool.

Tool UI Updates

We've refreshed the user interface for the Record ID, Sort, Sample, and Unique tools.

Tools Fully Compatible with AMP

These tools are now fully converted to AMP:

  • The Blob Convert tool is now fully converted to AMP. There is a new functionality within the Blob Convert tool that allows you to convert from a Blob field to a SHA256 hash.

  • Create Samples

  • Distance

  • Formula

  • Imputation

  • Multi-Field Formula

  • Multi-Row Formula

  • Spatial Process

New User Setting to Enable Default State for Engine Compatibility Mode

You now have the option to automatically enable Engine Compatibility Mode whenever you enable AMP Engine. Go to Engine Compatibility Mode to learn more.

Automated Crash Reporting

There is a new crash reporting feature that uses debug information collected from Engine runs. This information is used to analyze issues and make improvements in the product. For more information, go to the Automated Crash Reporting help page.

Amazon Tools

The Amazon S3 tools now support virtual-hosted-style paths. You can also enter a direct URL path to a file or folder. They can now also read, create, and overwrite XLSX files.

DCM Migration Tool

There is a new Migration tool to help you quickly and effortlessly transfer your current workflows to DCM-utilizing connections. For more information, go to the Migration Tool help page.

DCM Adoption

The option to enable and disable Data Connection Manager (DCM) in System and User Settings is no longer available. If you have DCM disabled in Designer and Server, it is automatically enabled when you update to 2023.2.

DCM Mode selection is still available both on the System Settings and User Settings level, with the options of Optional, Default, Only, and Enforced, allowing you to choose a preferred way of using Designer and DCM. In the Optional mode, new connections are configured outside DCM with the option to opt-in for DCM for individual tools.

With DCM as Default, connections are by default stored in DCM with the option to opt-out from using DCM. The Only and Enforced modes do not allow configuring new tools outside of DCM, while the Only mode doesn't enforce DCM usage on already configured tools in existing workflows.

DCM Support for ODBC Technologies

We're extending support for DCM to all database technologies. You can now create and store connections using DCM instead of creating DSNs first. Additionally, you can sync connections between your Designer and Server instances via DCM, without the need to set up DSNs.

Configurable Connection Timeout for ODBC Connections

You now have the ability to improve the connectivity experience and connect to remote data sources or data sources operating in peak times that are not able to respond within the 30-second timeframe.

OIDC Authentication for HashiCorp Vault

You are now able to leverage OIDC token authentication when fetching secrets from HashiCorp Vault with DCM.

Generic OAuth

This feature lets you drastically improve security when you connect to driver-based data sources supported by Designer. When you enable Generic OAuth authentication methods, you can leverage custom identify providers (IdPs) when you establish connections with individual data sources.

Databricks Unity Catalog

The new feature allows you to work with Unity Catalog-enabled Databricks instances. Go to Databricks Unity Catalog for more information about configuration and use.

Merge Tables in Databricks

With the Merge Tables functionality, you are now able to update or delete data in your target delta table in Databricks Unity Catalog using the InDB tools. Go to the Merge Tables help page for more information about configuration and use.

Cancel Query Logic for Snowflake

You can now unblock your data pipelines when you cancel execution locally. This feature lets you cut costs when you work with Snowflake and improves overall database interaction.

Azure AD Authentication Updates

  • Redshift: With this feature, Alteryx enables enterprise-grade authentication for Redshift. This allows you to leverage Azure Active Directory identities when you access data in Redshift.

  • ADLS Staging for Databricks Bulk Loader: This feature lets you improve security when you work with Databricks Bulk Loader. Organizations can granularly manage access to individual containers within a storage account instead of granting storage account-level access.

  • Azure SQL Server, Azure Synapse, and Azure SQL Database: This feature drastically improves the user experience when you work with the referenced data sources. Instead of re-authenticating on each workflow execution, you are now able to use credentials stored in DCM to set up connections to these data sources.

Publish to Tableau Server Tool Removal

The Publish to Tableau Server tool has been removed from the installer. Please use the Tableau Output tool (which provides updated features) instead.

End of Support for Tableau .tde Files

Warning

As of the Tableau 2023.1 release, Tableau has deprecated the TDE extract file format and by default does not allow the publishing of TDE content. Starting with Designer Version 2023.2, Alteryx does not support Tableau TDE extract files anymore. Existing workflows will continue to run as long as they are not edited.

Python SDK Example Tool Removal

The Python SDK Example tool (SDK Examples tool category) is no longer available. You can access SDK example tools that use the new v2 Python SDK at Alteryx IO Resources.

OpenSSL Version Upgrade

We have updated OpenSSL to version 3.0.8. This addresses several vulnerabilities present in older versions:

Legacy Alteryx Platform Access

You no longer have access to the legacy Alteryx Platform via the File menu's Save and Open options. Additionally, the Manage Alteryx Links option (previously used to manage links to the legacy Alteryx Platform) is no longer available via the Options menu.

Important

Please note that the legacy Alteryx Platform, in this case, does not refer to the new Alteryx Analytics Cloud Platform (AACP).

Windows 11 Support

Alteryx Designer now supports Microsoft Windows 11 for Designer versions 2023.2 and newer.

End of Support for Windows Server 2012

Warning

As of Designer version 2023.2, Alteryx no longer supports Windows Server 2012 as it has reached the end of support by Microsoft. Go to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/announcements/windows-server-2012-r2-end-of-support to learn more.

New Features: Intelligence Suite

Python Version Upgrade

We have upgraded the Intelligence Suite Python version to 3.8.16.

Barcode Tool Dependencies

Note: Alteryx Server relies upon the native Windows SChannel implementation for inbound TLS/HTTPS and TLS Service Layer communications. In a networking context, OpenSSL is used only in 1) outbound connections occurring as a result of Engine/AMP/SDK-tool execution during workflow runs, and 2) outbound connections to alteryx.com and flexnetoperations.com for licensing and activation.
