Activate Alteryx

Version:
Current
Last modified: April 29, 2020

Use the online activation service to activate an Alteryx product, or use offline (file activation) steps to activate from a computer that cannot access the internet.

Before you activate Alteryx, verify your network meets System Requirements and has access to all required domains. Active licenses can be viewed and managed in Designer.

Activate License Online

Use the license key from your license administrator to activate a product license.

To activate online...

  1. Open Alteryx Designer. If the Designer Activation window does not open automatically, select Options > Manage Licenses > Activate New License. For Server, if you have no valid licenses, Alteryx displays Install License. Select OK to continue.
  2. In the Alteryx Designer Activation window, enter your email address.
  3. Enter or paste your License keys, one per line.
  4. Select Activate. If your email address has not been previously registered, a registration window displays. Provide your information to continue.
  5. In the Activation Success window, select Experience Alteryx.

Activate License Offline (File Activation)

As an alternative to online activation, you can submit a request for an activation (.bin) file, upload the .bin file to the Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal, and then use the .bin file to activate license keys on your computer. A separate license key is required for each product.

To activate Alteryx on a computer that is offline, you must have access to the Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal on another computer so that you can upload the request (.req) file.

Watch Offline Activation Video

If you want to activate with a file, select Activate with File to open the Alteryx Alteryx Offline Activation window.

Create Request (.req) File From the Offline Computer

  1. Open Alteryx Designer. If the Alteryx Designer Activation window does not open automatically, select Options > Manage Licenses > Activate New License.
  2. In the Alteryx Offline Activation window, select Create to create a request (.req) file to request product activation.
  3. Enter your First name, Last name, and Email address and then enter or paste your License keys. Use lowercase letters when entering your email address.
  4. Select Create request. Alteryx creates a request file with your email address and .req extension: name@company.com.req.
  5. Select Save to save the request (.req) file where it can be accessed from the Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal or send the file to your license administrator.

Upload Request File to Downloads and Licenses Portal

Internet access required is required for these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal at licenses.alteryx.com.
  2. On the Home page, select Upload Activation Request.
  3. Select Browse to find and select the request (.req) file.
  4. Select to upload the request (.req) file. The Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal generates an activation file with your email address and .bin extension: name@company.com.bin. Alteryx saves the activation file as a binary (.bin) file to the computer's default download location. The .bin file contains the activation information.
  5. Select Save to save the activation (.bin) file so that you can access it from the offline computer.

Open Activation (.bin) File on Offline Computer

Use the offline computer to browse to the activation file you created in the previous step. This file must be accessible to the offline computer. If you sent the file to the offline computer, you can search for capabilityresponse.bin file to locate it.

  1. In the Alteryx Designer Activation window on the offline computer, select Back. Alternatively, select Options > Manage Licenses > Activate New License to open the Alteryx Offline Activation window.
  2. Select Browse to find and select the activation (.bin) file.
  3. In the Activation Success window, select Experience Alteryx.

The Designer tools are now available.

Activate with License Server

To activate with a License Server...

  1. Open Designer. If the Alteryx Designer Activation window does not open automatically, select Options > Manage Licenses > Activate New License. For Alteryx Server, if you have no valid licenses, Alteryx displays Install License. Select OK to continue.
  2. Select here within To access your License Server, click here. Alteryx displays Manage Licenses.
  3. In License Server Connectivity, select Connect. Alteryx displays available licenses. If this is the first time you have activated Alteryx, enter your email address.
  4. Select Activate for each product you want to activate.
  5. Select Close.

FAQ

What information does Alteryx capture and store during the license activation process?

Alteryx captures and stores the information needed to activate and validate a license key on a device.

Alteryx uses FlexNet Operations (FNO) as a 3rd-party service to provide licensing administration. Alteryx is the producer of the license; a user is the user of the license. The FNO service captures and stores the information necessary to activate and validate a license key on a device.

License keys are user and device based. A license key is attached to a user’s email address and a device. The combination of a device or machine name together with a user's email address creates a device ID.

  • Online Activation: The device ID is stored by FNO. FNO can then perform validation checks to ensure the license key is still valid.
  • Offline Activation: The device ID is uploaded to FNO when the *.req file is uploaded during the offline activation process.

License administrators can view machines with active licenses by signing in to the Alteryx Downloads and Licenses portal at licenses.alteryx.com.

Can I install Alteryx on a virtual machine (VM)?

You may install an Alteryx license on a VM if your contract permits it. Please contact your sales representative for more information about enabling your Alteryx license on a virtual machine.

  • Server OS Environment: You may install Alteryx on a Windows server operating system (OS) if your contract permits it. Contact your sales representative for more information about enabling your Alteryx license on Windows server OS.
  • Session-Based VM: A session-based (non-persistent) VM will wipe out the license key information each time the user logs out. Since a license key is assigned to a device and an email address, one solution is to write a script to install the license key. Alteryx does not support any scripts you might create.
