New Features: Designer

Designer Modern View

Note

Modern View is currently in preview. Preview provides early access to what’s coming next in Alteryx. Features may change as they continue to evolve.

Designer Modern View provides a streamlined experience for building, configuring, and running workflows in Designer desktop, with updated Tool Palette, Results, configuration, and canvas experiences.

Product App Bar and Workflow Actions

Modern View includes a hamburger menu where you can create, open, and save workflows as well as manage Data Connection Manager (DCM) connections. You can open and save workflows locally, in Alteryx One, or on Alteryx Server.

Workflow Status Indicators

The Product App Bar displays running, saving, unsaved, and view-only workflow states. These indicators provide visibility into the current state of your workflow.

Classic Tool Configuration Support

You can open and edit tools that use Classic configuration interfaces directly in Modern View, including installed connectors and SDK tools. This support helps you continue working with existing workflows without switching to Classic View.

Extended Data Types

Modern View supports extended Desktop data types, including Blob, SpatialObj, Time, Fixed Decimal, and additional string and numeric types. Supported tools preserve these types during field selection, filtering, formula creation, joins, and other type-aware operations.

Suggestions aren’t available in Modern View.

In-DB Anchors and Connections

In-DB tools, anchors, and connections render on the Modern View canvas. Blue In-DB anchors connect only to compatible blue anchors, while the gray Write Data In-DB output anchor can connect to blue anchors. Connections between In-DB tools continue to use double lines.

Tidy Workflow Layout

Tidy automatically arranges an entire workflow or selected tools into a cleaner, layered layout. It aligns and spaces tools and reduces connection crossings without changing workflow logic, and you can reverse the entire operation with the undo option.

Multiple Workflow Tabs

Modern View supports opening and working with multiple workflows in tabs. Tabs display running and unsaved states, and closing an unsaved workflow prompts you to save your changes. When many workflows are open, you can navigate to tabs that extend beyond the visible tab bar.

Tool and Control Containers

Tool Containers and Control Containers render in Modern View with nested, disabled, collapsed, and expanded states. You can move or delete multiple containers and preserve their positions and key visual settings when switching between Modern and Classic View.

You can add Control Containers from the canvas context menu, but they aren’t yet available in the tool palette.

Use Alteryx One Macros in Designer Workflows

You can now insert Designer macros saved in your Alteryx One library into your Designer workflows. You can choose a specific macro version for your workflow or choose to always use the latest version.

When you save the workflow to Alteryx One as YXZP, the package references the macro in Alteryx One by default. You can include the macro as copy via Dependencies if needed. For details, go to Use Alteryx One Macros in Designer Workflows.

Note that the standard local macro functionality remains the same.

Workspace Execution

To run a Designer Workflow Package (YXZP) that references a macro saved in your Alteryx One Library, your Workspace Execution engine version must be 2026.3 or newer.

Decoupled Predictive Tools and Alteryx Intelligence Suite Installers

We’ve updated the Predictive Tools and Alteryx Intelligence Suite install experience. When you upgrade Designer, Predictive Tools and Alteryx Intelligence Suite are uninstalled only if the supported version differs from the version in the new Designer install. A reinstall, using the standalone installer, is only required when the installer detects an incompatible version.

If you attempt to install a version of Predictive Tools or Intelligence Suite that is incompatible with your Designer version, a warning message alerts you to the compatibility issue, and you won't be able to proceed.

Streamlined Designer Launch Experience

Designer users no longer need to complete a separate activation after signing in to the Alteryx One app. When you launch Designer from an active Alteryx One app session, you can start using Designer without signing in or activating again.

AMP Performance Improvements

We’ve made several performance improvements in the AMP engine:

  • Join by Specific Fields when processing large datasets.

  • Union, Append Fields, Find Replace, Spatial Match, and Control Container tools that process ordered inputs.

    • When working with large datasets, AMP now prioritizes upstream branches according to input consumption order, reducing record buffering (spill-to-disk activity).

Parallel Execution of Batch Macro on AMP

Batch Macros now support a new option to enable parallel execution. In workflows where system resources are underutilized, running macro iterations in parallel can improve resource utilization and reduce overall workflow execution time.

Modernized Legacy XLS Support

Starting with Designer 26.3, all 32-bit components have been removed from the product. As a result, reading legacy XLS files now requires the 64-bit Microsoft Access Database Engine (ACE) driver to be installed.

We recommend migrating existing XLS files to the XLSX format. Legacy XLS support remains available via the 64-bit ACE driver during this migration period; however, deprecation warnings will continue to appear, as support for the XLS format is planned for removal in a future release.
