Set Up Ask Alteryx in Designer

WebView2

Ask Alteryx relies on a Microsoft technology called WebView2. Most versions of Windows include it. Windows Server doesn't currently include it. If WebView2 isn't installed, Ask Alteryx prompts you to install it.

We recommend that an Admin user install WebView2 for all users.

Ask Alteryx is available to all users with a Basic or Full User role on a Professional or Enterprise Edition. New trial users can also access Ask Alteryx.

Important

If you activate Designer offline, Ask Alteryx isn't available.

Designer versions 2025.2 and later include Ask Alteryx. You don't need to install it separately. Ask Alteryx updates automatically when you reload Ask Alteryx or restart Designer. To get started, download and install Designer from Alteryx One.

After you install Designer, Ask Alteryx appears as a window, similar to the tool configuration window. You can dock or hide the window from the 3-dot menu. To bring back the Ask Alteryx window, go to View and then select Ask Alteryx.

Connect Ask Alteryx

Connect Ask Alteryx to an Alteryx One workspace from the chat window in Designer.

  1. In the Ask Alteryx chat window, select Start. If the window isn't open, go to View and then select Ask Alteryx.

  2. If your workspace isn't already selected, select it from the Available Workspaces dropdown. To add a different Alteryx One workspace:

    1. Go to File > Manage Connections > Alteryx Links.

    2. Select New, and then select your cloud instance. For example, select United States if your URL starts with us1.

    3. Sign in to Alteryx One, and then select the workspace you want to use.

    4. Follow the on-screen prompts. You can then select the new workspace in Ask Alteryx.

  3. Select Continue to start your chat with Ask Alteryx.

Your chats are saved to the workspace you connect to. They're also available in Ask Alteryx in Alteryx One, so you can continue a chat in either place. If you switch to a different workspace, you see the chats for that workspace.

Note

Chat history isn't available in the Designer Modern UI preview.

Access Controls for Admins

The Workspace Admin can limit access to Ask Alteryx at the user role level and Data Awareness at the workspace level.

Ask Alteryx User Access

On a Professional or Enterprise Edition, Ask Alteryx is available by default to all users with the Basic or Full User role. To limit user access to Ask Alteryx, create a custom role without the Ask Alteryx capability. Then assign that role to your users. Learn more about roles and capabilities.

Data Awareness Workspace Access

To limit how Ask Alteryx can sample data for all users on a workspace, disable Data Awareness from the Workspace Settings:Workspace Settings

  1. In Alteryx One, select Workspace Admin in the left navigation pane, and then select Settings.

  2. Go to AI > Ask Alteryx > Ask Alteryx Data Awareness.

  3. Select Disabled from the dropdown. Changes to workspace settings save automatically.

Limitations

Proxy Server Access

Proxy access for Ask Alteryx is supported in Designer versions 2026.2 and later.

For Designer versions 2026.1 and earlier, Ask Alteryx doesn't support access through a proxy. Ask Alteryx requires a direct internet connection to Alteryx One services. If your network requires proxy server access to reach the internet, Ask Alteryx won't be available in Designer.
