Get Started with Alteryx Skills

Alteryx Skills let supported AI coding assistants work with local Designer workflows. You can use them to build, inspect, run, and repair trusted workflows for repeatable business analysis.

Use Alteryx Skills for tasks such as data preparation, reconciliation, compliance reporting, operational analytics, governed calculations, and other reusable business logic.

The public Alteryx Skills repository is available here.

Supported AI Assistants

Alteryx Skills can be installed for:

  • Codex

  • Antigravity

  • Claude Code

  • Claude Desktop

What the Alteryx Plugin Includes

The plugin contains 3 skills:

  • alteryx-designer

  • alteryx-asset-discovery

  • alteryx-insights

Agents can select alteryx-designer automatically when your request clearly involves local Designer workflows, such as:

  • Building a workflow.

  • Editing a YXMD file.

  • Running a workflow with Designer Engine.

  • Repairing execution errors.

  • Validating workflow outputs.

Agents can select alteryx-asset-discovery automatically when your request depends on knowing what already exists, such as:

  • Locating workflows, macros, or data related to a business question.

  • Checking whether logic already exists elsewhere.

  • Grounding a new build in real, existing data.

  • Verifying a dataset's schema before you use it.

  • Finding example XML for a tool that isn't natively supported.

This skill is read-only. It doesn't modify workflows, macros, or data.

Agents can select alteryx-insights automatically when your request asks a business data question, such as:

  • Analyzing totals, trends, or changes between periods.

  • Evaluating goal variance, correlations, or outliers.

  • Looking up exact records or rankings.

  • Producing grouped summaries from governed datasets.

This skill is powered by Alteryx Auto Insights and works only with governed Alteryx One datasets.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have a supported AI assistant, a local Designer installation, and authorization to use the relevant Alteryx products, files, data, accounts, workspaces, services, and permissions.

Workflow inspection and XML editing can proceed without Designer, but workflow execution and run validation require local Designer Engine access.

Asset discovery and insights queries require authorization to the relevant Alteryx One workspaces and governed datasets.

These skills do not bypass Alteryx authentication, authorization, workspace controls, product terms, service terms, or entitlement checks.

Verify Installation

After installation, restart your AI assistant if needed. Confirm that the Alteryx plugin and its skills (alteryx-designer, alteryx-asset-discovery, alteryx-insights) are available.

Inspect this .yxmd and explain what the workflow does.

Use Alteryx Skills

Your AI assistant might automatically select the Alteryx skill when your request clearly involves Designer workflows, existing assets, or a business data question.

Build an Alteryx workflow that joins these customer and order files, filters inactive accounts, and writes a reconciled output.
Inspect this .yxmd and explain why the final output is missing the expected revenue column.
Run this Designer workflow and fix any configuration errors that prevent it from completing.
Find any existing workflows or macros that already reconcile customer and order data before I build a new one.
What's the schema for the accounts dataset, and has anyone already validated it?
Why did revenue drop 12% quarter-over-quarter for the West region, and which accounts drove the change?
Give me the exact ranking of the top 10 accounts by ARR this quarter from the governed sales dataset.

Runtime Requirements

Workflow execution requires a local Designer installation.

Asset discovery and insights queries require access to the relevant Alteryx One workspaces and governed datasets.

Updating Alteryx Skills Plugin

Claude and Codex (ChatGPT) desktop apps let you update the plugin from the settings menu.

Update in Claude App

  1. Open settings (Ctrl , or select your profile name, then Settings).

  2. Select Plugins.

  3. Select Browse.

  4. Select the Personal tab.

  5. Select the three-dot menu next to skills, above the Alteryx plugin.

  6. Select Check for Updates.

  7. A confirmation message appears in the lower-right corner of the screen when the update finishes.

Update in OpenAI App (Codex/ChatGPT)

  1. Open settings (Ctrl , or select your profile name, then Settings).

  2. Select Plugins.

  3. Select the Marketplace tab.

  4. Select Upgrade next to the plugin name.

  5. A confirmation message appears at the top of the screen when the update finishes.

Update in Antigravity

Updating the Antigravity plugin requires CLI commands. Open PowerShell and run the following commands 1 at a time.

  1. Run agy plugin list to view your installed plugins. Note the importedAt date for the alteryx plugin (this is the last time you installed it).

  2. Run agy plugin uninstall alteryx to remove the plugin and purge its package directory.

  3. Run agy plugin install https://github.com/alteryx/skills.git to reinstall the plugin. This is the same command you used for the initial install, and it pulls the most recent version from GitHub.

  4. Run agy plugin list again to confirm that you installed the most recent version of the plugin.

Set Your Regional Endpoint (Optional)

Alteryx One is hosted in three regions, and the plugin ships with the United States endpoint. If your workspace is in the Europe or Asia Pacific region, you must change the endpoint before the cloud tools work.

  • United States:https://us1.alteryxcloud.com/mcp/v1?toolsets=insights,assets,designer,datasets,formulas,knowledge

  • Europe / Middle East:https://eu1.alteryxcloud.com/mcp/v1?toolsets=insights,assets,designer,datasets,formulas,knowledge

  • Asia Pacific:https://au1.alteryxcloud.com/mcp/v1?toolsets=insights,assets,designer,datasets,formulas,knowledge

There is no global endpoint. A single shared host would route requests through infrastructure outside the caller's region, and some data-residency commitments don't permit that. The endpoint must match your workspace's region, and no client can select it for you.

To change the endpoint, replace us1 with eu1 or au1 in the endpoint your client uses:

  • alteryx/.mcp.json, field url — for Codex, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop. Restart your client, or reload plugins, so it reconnects. Re-apply the edit after you upgrade the plugin, because an upgrade replaces the bundled configuration file.

  • Antigravity — set serverUrl in your user-level mcp_config.json. Refer to the Antigravity installation section above. Editing the plugin's bundled alteryx/mcp_config.json has no effect, because Antigravity doesn't read it. Restart agy after you change it.

Claude Code and Claude Desktop also support ${VAR} and ${VAR:-default} expansion in an MCP server url. You can make the edit once, as "url": "${ALTERYX_MCP_URL:-https://us1.alteryxcloud.com/mcp/v1?toolsets=insights,assets,designer,datasets,formulas,knowledge}", and set ALTERYX_MCP_URL in your environment. The bundled configuration doesn't use expansion, because Codex reads the same file and doesn't support that syntax.

If you define your own regional alteryx server instead of editing the bundled one, expect both to appear. Claude Code matches plugin-provided servers by endpoint, so a different URL registers as an additional server instead of replacing the bundled US entry.

When a server and its required tools are available, the skills use them by default. Local workflow tasks fall back to the bundled XML and PowerShell path when no local workflow tools are present. Cloud workflow tasks have no fallback. Local asset discovery needs neither server — it uses your agent's own file search and read capabilities within the directories you authorize.

Troubleshooting
