DCM Interface

The Data Connection Manager user interface in Alteryx One is the centralized interface for creating, managing, sharing, and synchronizing DCM connections, credentials, data sources, and external vaults.

DCM in Designer

You can access DCM in Designer in two ways, depending on the actions you want to perform:

Management Mode

Go to File > Manage Connections to open the full Connection Manager.

  • Data Sources: The databases, cloud services, or other systems you are connecting to.

  • Credentials: Usernames/ passwords, tokens, or keys used to authenticate.

  • Connections: Pairing of a Data Source with a Credential.

  • Alteryx Links: Links Designer to an Alteryx One workspace so that Desktop-built workflows can run in the cloud.

  • External Vaults: Connects DCM to a third-party vault to fetch credentials securely

  • Synchronize: Controls how connections sync between Designer and Server/ Alteryx One.

  • Proxy Servers: Proxy configuration for network routing.

  • Backup and Restore: Back up your DCM storage or restore it from a backup file.

Setup Mode

When you place an Input tool or Output tool on the canvas and select Connect to Data, you get a simplified view built for quick workflow configuration:

  • Recents: Access recently used connections, files, and datasets.

  • Datasets: Datasets linked from your Alteryx One workspace

  • Connections: Browse or create connections without leaving the canvas.

Designer also lets you control how DCM handles credentials at both the admin and user levels. Go to Options > User Settings > Edit User Settings > General > Override DCM Settings.

DCM in Alteryx One

In Alteryx One, DCM lives in the DCM Connections module. The interface is simplified compared to Designer. Connections, sharing, and sync are managed from a single, centralized view designed for admins and teams working across the cloud rather than one local machine.

To access DCM in Alteryx One, navigate to Data from the Alteryx One home page. You will see the following options:

  • Datasets: Datasets linked from your Alteryx One workspace.

  • Desktop Connections: The pairing of a Data Source with a Credential, created in Alteryx Designer for local workflow development and execution, and managed via DCM across Designer Desktop, Server, and Alteryx One (Workspace Execution).

  • Desktop Connections: DCM connections created in Alteryx Designer for local workflow development and execution.

  • External Vaults: Third-party vaults that let you store credentials and use them during runtime. External Vaults apply only to Desktop Connections and are not available for Cloud Connections. For more information, see External Vaults.

Note

The term Connections is used across the Alteryx platform, including Designer Cloud, Auto Insights, and Live Query. It may refer to different connection types depending on the product. Desktop Connections in Alteryx One are managed through DCM in Designer Desktop, Server, and Alteryx One (Workspace Execution).
