Workspace Execution on Alteryx Data Plane
By default, your new Alteryx One Enterprise account workspace is configured to use the Alteryx Data Plane to execute your Designer-built workflows. This Workspace Execution option uses the Alteryx One Software as a Service (SaaS) environment to process data, meaning you don’t have to worry about infrastructure because it’s fully managed by Alteryx.
The Alteryx Data Plane is an ideal option if you don’t manage highly sensitive data. It eliminates the need to bring your own hardware and cloud infrastructure, reducing reliance on extensive admin resources. If you need workflow automation without a heavy lift from your internal IT team, the Alteryx Data Plane is a great fit.
Private Data Handling
If you have requirements to store your data and run data processing jobs in your own cloud infrastructure, Private Data Handling provides more security and control for sensitive data. It also improves performance and reduces egress costs by moving processing in Alteryx One next to your data. For more information, go to Private Data Handling.
Overview
Workspace Execution is automatically enabled on your Alteryx One Enterprise workspace, allowing users with appropriate permissions to execute Designer workflows in the cloud (instead of on local machines). This capability is available to Alteryx One users with these roles:
Basic User
Full User
Workspace Admin
Custom Roles
Important
Users need Author access to Workspace Execution, specifically the Desktop Workflows and Desktop Connections permissions.
For additional information on Workspace Execution (including information on how to link Designer and your Alteryx One workspace), go to Workspace Execution.
Alteryx Data Plane
By default, Workspace Execution uses the Alteryx-managed Alteryx Data Plane. This simplified option provides multi-tenant data processing and storage, reducing your reliance on your internal admin resources.
Additional Data Storage and Processing Options
Private Data Storage
Alteryx Data Storage (ADS) is the Alteryx file storage. This is the default storage location for all newly created workspaces.
Private Data Storage allows you to replace ADS with your own file store. Private file storage supports Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3, Azure ADLS, and Google Cloud Storage (GCS) as storage providers. You can use Private Data Storage as part of a hybrid solution (along with the Alteryx Data Plane for processing) or as part of Private Data Handling.
Private Data Handling
In addition to the Alteryx Data Plane, you can configure Workspace Execution for Private Data Handling. With Private Data Handling, you have control over data processing and data storage if the default hosted configuration doesn't meet your requirements:
Move to Private Data Storage to keep any persisted data within your network.
Move to Private Data Processing to ensure both data processing and storage occur within your network. This option uses the Alteryx Private Data Plane and gives your IT departments full control over scaling, security, etc.
Alteryx Data Plane Requirements
To take advantage of Workspace Execution via the Alteryx Data Plane, you need the following:
Alteryx One Platform Enterprise Tier
You must use Designer version 2024.1 or newer. To connect Designer with your Alteryx One workspace, go to Link Designer and Alteryx One.
Data Connection Manager (DCM) is required for all connections.
Only use Workspace Execution-compatible connectors. These are limited to file-based sources that you can upload to the Alteryx One Platform or access outside your firewall using out-of-the-box drivers. For more information, go to Tool, Engine, Driver, and Connector Compatibility.
Only use Workspace Execution-compatible Designer tools. This means you can use all the tools included with the base Designer installation (custom tools are not supported).
For additional limitations, go to Notes, Limitations, and FAQ.
Customize Engine Version for Workspace Execution
Engine Version Auto Updates
You can choose to use any currently supported engine version for Workspace Execution (the last 4 releases).
Please note that if you are on an engine version that reaches end of support (when we release a new version), it will auto-update to the latest engine version. Alteryx will communicate via in-app banners and emails to warn admins of upcoming changes so they can update to a newer supported version to avoid the auto-update.
Workspace Execution is enabled by default for new workspaces (using the Alteryx Data Plane) and uses the latest engine version.
If you need to use a different engine version (for example, to match your users' Designer versions), follow these instructions (note you must be a Workspace Admin):
Sign in to your Alteryx One workspace.
Go to the Profile menu and select Workspace Admin.
Locate and select the Workspace Execution section in the left Workspace Management tab.
Select Configuration.
Next, use the Workspace Execution Engine Version dropdown to choose an engine version that best suits your workflow needs. If you’re not sure, we recommend using the latest version. If you need help choosing your engine version, go to Tool, Engine, Driver, and Connector Compatibility.
Once you choose your engine version, select the Update Engine Version button. Note that provisioning starts automatically and usually completes within 15 minutes.
After you make your selection, Alteryx automatically provisions a secure Workspace Execution environment in the Alteryx Data Plane.
Important
Workspace Execution automatically scales during times of peak usage.
Enable Alteryx Data Plane for Workspace Execution
To enable or disable the Alteryx Data Plane for Workspace Execution, you need to have Workspace Admin access. Follow these steps to enable or disable the data plane:
