Download and Install a Patch Update
Alteryx now gives you the ability to patch your installation of Designer or Server without the need to perform a full uninstall and reinstall. This replaces the previous stable/minor release process that was lengthy and created unwanted downtime.
Important
Patch updates don't replace regular major Alteryx Designer and Server releases (21.2, 21.3, 21.4, etc.)
Patch updates don't include new features, they only include defect fixes.
Patch Update Overview
Patch updates include fixes to defects between regular releases.
Patch updates are a replacement for our previous stable/minor releases.
Patch updates offer a faster and easier installation than the previous stable releases.
Depending on your situation, there are a couple of scenarios that you might encounter when you download and install a patch.
Patch Your Existing Major Version
If you have the base version of Designer or Server already installed (for example, 21.4.2), you can install the patch on top of this version. In this case, the build number doesn’t change after you install the patch but continues to reflect the build number of the base version.
To confirm that you have successfully installed the patch, you can reference the Patch number in Designer via Help > About. The Patch number appears next to the Version number.
Alternatively, to confirm that you have successfully installed the patch, you can reference the InstallInfo.ini file. By default, this file is found in…
Non-Admin Version of Designer:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Alteryx\Settings
Admin Version of Designer:
C:\Program Files\Alteryx\Settings
A patched install version includes a patch entry in the format: PatchNumber=x (where x is replaced by the patch number.)
Upgrade Previous Major Version to New Major Version with Patches
If you have a previous major version of Designer or Server installed (for example, 21.3.x), you can upgrade directly to a new major version that includes patches. This requires a full uninstall and reinstall and is similar to the process that you might be used to. You don’t have to upgrade to the major version first and then install patches on top of that.
As an example, let’s say you run version 2021.3 (any version) and you want to upgrade to 2021.4.2 with Patch 1. To do this, do a full uninstall and reinstall. After installation, the build number for 2021.4.2 is different than the initial GA version of 2021.4.2. This indicates that you now have a patched version. You can check your build number directly in Designer via Help > About.
Before You Install a Patch Update
If you’re installing the patch for an installation of Alteryx Designer, you need to close Designer if it’s running and install the patch via its EXE file.
If you’re installing the patch for an installation of Alteryx Server, open Windows Task Manager and stop Alteryx-related executables (specifically, AlteryxEngineCmd.exe and AlteryxConfiguration.exe). They will restart automatically at the end of the patch installation.

FAQ
Do I need to install a patch after I upgrade to a major version?
When you upgrade from a previous version (for example 21.3.x to 21.4.2 with a patch), you’re able to upgrade directly to the major version that includes the patch. You don’t need to upgrade to the next major version 1st and then apply the patch. The version number (21.4.2 in this case) is different than the initial major release because this is the patched version.
How do I know if I successfully installed a patch?
If you upgraded to a new major version with a patch, the version number is different than the version number of the initial major version. You can check your build number directly in Designer via Help > About.
If you install a Patch update for Designer, you can now reference the Patch number in Designer via Help > About. The Patch number appears next to the Version number.
Alternatively, if you installed a patch on top of your existing major version, you can follow this process:
To confirm that you have successfully installed the patch, you can reference the InstallInfo.ini file. By default, this file is found in…
Non-Admin Version of Designer:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Alteryx\Settings
Admin Version of Designer:
C:\Program Files\Alteryx\Settings
For a patched install version, the file includes a patch entry in the format: PatchNumber=x (where x is replaced by the patch number.)
