Alteryx Designer and FIPS: Tool Differences

Alteryx Designer-FIPS version 2022.1 was the first release of Designer that offers a FIPS 140-2 capable option for customers that require FIPS compliance. Please note that FIPS standards are developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for use by US government agencies and contractors. The general (non-FIPS) release version of Alteryx Designer is not FIPS capable. A separate release (and installer) is available under separate license terms, for our FIPS 140-2 customers.

Warning

If you've previously used Alteryx Designer, you might notice that certain Designer tools* and features are either not available or offer limited functionality with the Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.1 release.

Over time, we plan to make many of these tools and features available again in future Alteryx Designer-FIPS releases.

*Note that One Tool Examples associated with excluded tools are also not available.

Alteryx Designer-FIPS empowers data analysts with data prep, blending, and analytics solutions—with drag-and-drop capabilities that speed up every step of the analytic process. You have access to many of the great features typically available in Designer, with some limitations that we’ve noted on this page.

Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2023.1 Release

Alteryx Designer version 2023.1 offers separate GA and FIPS 140-2 capable products. For more information about FIPS, go to the NIST FIPS FAQ page.

Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2 Release

With the release of Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2, you now have access to several tools that were not available via the Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.1 release.

Note

The tools listed in the 2022.1 Release section below continue to be unavailable or have limited functionality unless otherwise noted in this section.

These tools are now available in the 2022.2 Alteryx Designer-FIPS release:

  • In/Out Tools: Map Input tool

  • Interface Tools: Map tool

  • Connectors Tools:

    • Microsoft Azure Data Lake Input and Microsoft Azure Data Lake Output

    • OneDrive Input and OneDrive Output

    • PowerBI Output

    • SharePoint Input (formerly SharePoint Files Input including lists reading functionality)

    • SharePoint Output (formerly SharePoint Files Output including lists writing functionality)

Note

Restart Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2 after you finish the installation of connectors.

To fully leverage the unlocked connectors, you need to enable DCM and select Allow or AllowAll in User Settings > DCM > SDK Access Mode and restart Designer to apply changes.

Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2 requires all workflows that use the Community Data Connectors above to also use Alteryx Multi-threaded Processing (AMP)—which is the default engine for all new workflows. If you plan to use these updated connectors in older workflows, you might need to enable AMP via Workflow - Configuration > Runtime > Use AMP Engine.

Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.1 Release

Alteryx Intelligence Suite

Alteryx Intelligence Suite is not available as part of Alteryx Designer-FIPS. This includes all tools in these tool categories:

  • Computer Vision

  • Machine Learning

  • Text Mining

Predictive Tools

Predictive tools are not available as part of the Alteryx Designer-FIPS. This includes tools in these tool categories:

  • AB Testing: All tools in this category are not available.

  • Data Investigation: These Data Investigation tools are not available:

    • Association Analysis

    • Contingency Table

    • Distribution Analysis

    • Field Summary

    • Frequency Table

    • Heat Plot

    • Histogram

    • Importance Weights

    • Plot of Means

    • Scatterplot

    • Violin Plot

  • Predictive: All tools in this category are not available.

  • Predictive Grouping: All tools in this category are not available.

  • Prescriptive: All tools in this category are not available.

  • Time Series: All tools in this category are not available.

Data Products

Business and Location Insights Data Packages are not available as part of Alteryx Designer-FIPS. This includes all tools in these tool categories:

  • Address

  • Behavior Analysis

  • Calgary

  • Demographic Analysis

Connect Tools

The ODBC Loader tool is not available.

These Connectors tools are not available in, or not compatible with, Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

  • Blob Convert: The Output MD5 Hash of Binary Data option is not available.

  • Download: In Alteryx Designer-FIPS, authentication credentials can't be passed via a workflow. You can download from websites that require authentication credentials via DCM connections.

  • The MD5 functions are not available inside these tools:

    • Dynamic Rename

    • Dynamic Select

    • Message

  • The Python tool is not available.

  • The R tool is not available.

In/Out Tools

ODBC Drivers

Although Alteryx Designer-FIPS supports ODBC drivers, the FIPS-capable drivers aren’t available for download from our websites.

  • These In/Out tools are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

    • Auto Insights Uploader

    • Map Input (Available starting with the Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2 release.)

    • XDF Input

    • XDF Output

  • The Input Data, Output Data, and Dynamic Input tools have partial functionality in Alteryx Designer-FIPS. These In/Out file types are not available:

    • CYDB (Alteryx Calgary)

    • MDB (ESRI Personal GeoDatabase, Microsoft Access 2000-2003)

    • SZ (Alteryx Spatial ZIP)

    • XLS (Microsoft Excel 1997-2003)

  • OLE DB connections are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS.

Interface Tools

  • These Interface tools are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

    • Map (Available starting with the Alteryx Designer-FIPS 2022.2 release.)

  • The MD5 functions are not available inside of these tools:

    • Action

    • Condition

    • Error Message

  • File Browse: The ability to connect to databases is not available.

  • Text Box: The Mask Text option is not available.

Laboratory Tools

These Laboratory tools are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

  • Charting (Deprecated)

  • Connect JSON Builder

  • Connect Output

  • Jupyter Flow

  • Key-Value Pair Extraction

  • Visual Layout

Preparation Tools

  • These Preparation tools are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

    • Create Samples

    • Oversample Field

    • Random % Sample

  • These Preparation tools have limited functionality in Alteryx Designer-FIPS. The MD5 functions are not available inside these tools:

    • Filter

    • Formula

    • Generate Rows

    • Multi-Field Formula

    • Multi-Row Formula

Reporting Tools

  • These Reporting tools are not available in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

    • Charting (Deprecated)

    • Insight

  • Table: MD5 functions are not available.

SDK Examples

The Python SDK Example tool is not available.

Spatial Tools

  • DriveTime calculations are not available as the Business and Location Insights Data Packages are not supported in FIPS. These Spatial tools have optional DriveTime calculation options which have been removed in Alteryx Designer-FIPS:

    • Distance

    • Find Nearest: Additionally, the ability to connect directly to databases is not available.

    • Trade Area

  • Non Overlapping Drivetime is not available.

  • Spatial Match: The ability to connect directly to databases is not available.
